New Years Resolutions

Uh…hello. It’s been…well, a while since I posted. I’m not sure exactly what happened, but my Autumn plans kind of fell apart. And then the holidays came, and I just ended up going on a somewhat unexpected hiatus. No real reason other than I was just busy with other things. But tomorrow is New Years and it’s that time of year to take stock in what you’re doing, figure out what’s important and what’s not, and make plans.

I love making plans.

I just tend to be terrible at following them.

But in the spirit of New Years, I’m making the decision that I like this little blog of mine. I like watching my shows and thinking about them and writing about them. And so I’m going to make some effort in the coming year to make it more of a priority and not something that so easily gets shoved aside for other things.

With that in mind, it’s time for me to make some television plans for the new year: 10 shows that I’m going to watch. Some are shows I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never seen (Breaking Bad, anyone?), some are shows I quit before but want to give a second chance, and some are old favorites that need a re-watch.

A Seasonal Update

Despite the fact that things have been pretty quiet over here in my tv troll cave (it is shocking how tiring the first week of school is when you work in a preschool), I am super looking forward to the start of the fall tv season. To the point of being a super dork with a calendar of premiers. Some years it seems like all the good ideas are gone, that everything new is going to terrible, but this year I’m going in fairly optimistic. There are a few new shows I’m very excited to start and lots of returning favorites. Of course, there are some shows that look terrible and are only going to last en episode or two, but they won’t bother me. I’ve got more than enough to keep me occupied and content. It’s going to be a good season.

With a good new season of television ahead of me, I’m looking forward to starting a good new season here! I’ve only been writing this blog for about six months, so I didn’t get to kick off last season. I’m kind of excited (in a supremely genuine and dorky way)! There’s just going to be so much good stuff (and not so good stuff) to talk about.

Truth be told, the shear amount of fantastic stuff I watch and want to talk about – well, it can become a little daunting. There’s just so much! So I do have to keep reminding myself – I do this for fun. So there’s no need to get stressed or overwhelmed. If it takes me longer than I planned to finish writing something up, well…no one but me will give a shit. And sometimes I’ll have plans for a post that will must never come to pass. Seriously, there’s a follow up post on Jeff and Annie that’s been languishing in my drafts folder for months now (and every time I go into that file it judges me a little bit more). But if I never manage to finish it, and just decide to move on, I’m the only one who’ll know.

I do have plans for the season. Because it’s me, and I honestly enjoy planning things far more than I actually enjoy following through, so of course I have plans for the season…

I’m not a recapper. I just…I assume anyone who stumbles onto this blog has already seen the shows or the seasons or the episodes that I’m talking about so I just don’t think there’s any reason for me to feel compelled to give anyone a blow by blow of what happened. I just don’t. If you want to know what happened in the episode, watch the episode! I mean, sometimes not a lot happens in a particular episode. Or not enough stood out to me to warrant a discussion. Or a discussion will come out of multiple episodes, not just one. Not to mention, I just don’t have the time! I work full time, this is a hobby, there’s no way I, all on my lonesome, can recap everything I watch. And stay sane.

So, no. Not a recapper.

That doesn’t mean I won’t ever talk about certain of my favorite shows every week, just it won’t be a given. Instead, I talk about what stands out to me. What I find interesting or weird. The story lines I like. The characters I hate. Whatever.

do plan to attempt a…not quite a review, just a reaction if you will, of all the series premiers I watch. And returning season premiers. Maybe. Well…that’s the plan. Let’s be for real, that will not end up happening, but it’s the lofty goal I’m aiming for. And though it won’t come to pass until the end of the season, I’m going to try to keep doing season wrap ups. Because as much as I like breaking down elements of individual episodes, sometimes you just gotta look at the whole picture.

Okay. So I’ve put my plans for the season into actual words. I feel prepared.

A Quick Update

I just wanted to quickly say, for any of you who read regularly, that things have been a little slow on my end the past few weeks. Partly that’s due to me not having a whole lot of shows I watch during the summer (I think just three?), but it’s mostly due to some personal things. I lost my job recently due to company downsizing fairly recently, and that has certainly pulled some of my focus lately.

Things seem to be looking up, however, giving me more peace of mind to spend my free time watching and talking about television. I’m working on some things – hope to have a discussion about realism in television up in a day or two, not to mention I finally finished Season Six of Community – but things are just a little…slower…right now. That’s all.
