New Years Resolutions

Uh…hello. It’s been…well, a while since I posted. I’m not sure exactly what happened, but my Autumn plans kind of fell apart. And then the holidays came, and I just ended up going on a somewhat unexpected hiatus. No real reason other than I was just busy with other things. But tomorrow is New Years and it’s that time of year to take stock in what you’re doing, figure out what’s important and what’s not, and make plans.

I love making plans.

I just tend to be terrible at following them.

But in the spirit of New Years, I’m making the decision that I like this little blog of mine. I like watching my shows and thinking about them and writing about them. And so I’m going to make some effort in the coming year to make it more of a priority and not something that so easily gets shoved aside for other things.

With that in mind, it’s time for me to make some television plans for the new year: 10 shows that I’m going to watch. Some are shows I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never seen (Breaking Bad, anyone?), some are shows I quit before but want to give a second chance, and some are old favorites that need a re-watch.

Grey’s Anatomy Rewatch: Who Comes Between Me and My Man

meredith and the shepherdsSomewhere in the middle of…I think Season Eight? I quit watching Grey’s Anatomy. It wasn’t any kind of “I hate this show!” rage quit, it was just that I got a little behind. And then I got a whole season behind. And it just snowballed from there. The last episode I remember watching was the alternate reality episode where Meredith was engaged to Alex.

I tried to do a big rewatch and catch-up last summer in time for the start of the new season, but life got in the way and I quit right after George died (but before the funeral). This year I’m trying again. I’m pretty positive I won’t actually be done in time for the season premiere, but I’m hoping to be all caught up by the end of October. I’m mid Season Four right now, so we’ll see.

Top Ten Tuesday: the Long Goodbye

Well this is definitely the roughest going for any post I’ve written so far. Let me tell you, finding and watching all these clips? I’ve been weeping steadily since about the third one. You’re welcome.

I think I’m in the minority when it comes to tv characters dying. And by that I mean I’m not often all that outraged by it. There are certainly characters that I have and will mourn, but I’m not throwing in the towel if my favorite bites it. And I’m not one to find death a cop out for the writers – I’ll leave it to others to think up crazy ways to write off their favs. Death happens to every one of us. It’s how all our stories will end. And it almost never gives us a clean wrap-up.

So I get that people are up in arms right now about Derek Shepherd’s last episode. But I’m not one of them.

Top Ten Tuesday: Ladies Night

This past Sunday was International Women’s Day (and also, my birthday which is almost as important). So for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, we’re going to celebrate women. I realize that there’s absolutely no way to make a comprehensive list of awesome women and awesome female moments and relationships with just ten measly entries, so take this list as a jumping off point. This is a mere smattering of great characters and great shows, but it’s ten moments that have stuck with me: ten moments of women standing up for themselves, of women supporting other women, of women fighting for their families, and of women loving themselves. Enjoy the clips.

Top Ten Tuesday: Couples

Maybe I’m a week late since Valentine’s Day has just passed, but I thought on this inaugural edition of Top Ten Tuesdays I would start be spreading some love.

No matter what your favorite show is about – be it prison, family, superheroes, high school, or cops – someone, somewhere is falling in love. There’s no hiding from it. There’s no use telling a story without it in there somewhere. So let’s celebrate it.

Today’s list features my Top Ten Couples: canonical love stories featured on shows that have yet to reach their series finale. Not all these couples are currently together – in fact one hasn’t even managed to get themselves together yet, though their feelings for one another are definitely clear – but they’ve made a mark on their respective shows.
